
PEGRAM, ROBERT F., age 90, of Montgomery, Alabama, died at home July 15, 2015 after a brief illness. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant after 26 years of service. He served his country on active duty during three wars; World War II, the Korean War and The Vietnam War. He retired from the Air Force on July 1, 1973. In 1975, he and his son, Don, formed ALACOM Company, a telecommunication business which he managed until he retired last year.
Mr. Pegram was an active member of Dalraida UMC and former longtime member of Perry Hill UMC where he served on the Administrative Board, Pastoral Committee, Finance Committee and in many other capacities He was a very generous person, ministering to the elderly for many years by visiting nursing homes in the area, always taking them fruit and candy and spending extra time with those who had no family. He also supported the youth groups and choirs at both churches and loved their music. He helped many needy people throughout the years and supported many charities. In 1997, he was presented the Harry Denham award by the United Methodist Conference for outstanding Lay person of the year. He was most proud of this award. He also received the Golden Rule Award the same year. He will be greatly missed by all the people that he helped along his journey in life.
Mr. Pegram was born on August 27, 1924, in Lilesville, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Nezzie Irene Pegram of Lilesville, NC., his brother, Joe Pegram, Sr., Wadesboro, NC and his wife of 58 years, Dorothy N. Pegram. He is survived by his wife, Jean B. Pegram, two daughters, Judith P. Wilkinson (Ron) and Wanda P. Dyer (Gene) both of Montgomery, and his son, Robert D. Pegram (Su) of Lufkin, TX; and his step-children, Carl Moring (Patsy) and Trudy Collum (Billy) He was” Papa” to his grandchildren, Rene’ Savelis Gunter (Booth), Montgomery, Marcus P. Savelis (Mitzi), Birmingham, AL, Jon Phillip Dyer (Whitney), Jason Robert Dyer (Trish) and Justin Patrick Dyer(Christy) Montgomery, AL; Robert Nathan Pegram (Cara) and Lisa Irene Pegram , Lufkin, TX. He also is survived by seven precious great-grandchildren, Jon Lawrence Dyer, Easton Anders Dyer and Peyton Marie Dyer of Montgomery, AL, Celeste Dawn Pegram and Destiny Joy Pegram of Lufkin, TX and twins Jackson Marcus and Hannah Grace Savelis of Birmingham, AL. He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Donnelly of Melbourne Beach, FL and a brother, William Lee Pegram of Greenville, SC, and several loving nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at 11:o’clock AM at Dalraida UMC with Rev. Jim Reece and Rev. David McVay officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, July 20, 2015 from 5-7 PM at Leak Memory Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Pall Bearers will be his grandsons.
