

Neil was born in Opelika on May 20, 1940, and raised on a farm outside of Tuskegee called Society Hill. His loving parents were Bob and Doris D. Stanford.
After Neil graduated from Sidney Lanier High School, he attended school in Nashville to become a printer.
Neil met Therese Kolasky when they were both working for the Alabama State Department of Education. Neil and Therese had a Valentine’s themed wedding in February 1971. They went on to have two children, Lisa Ann and Shelley Neil, Jr. Neil was beyond proud of his children. Lisa is a pulmonologist at Montgomery Pulmonary Consultants. Shelley is an analytical chemist for the National Institutes of Health.
Neil was a Methodist and the leader of Boy Scout Troop 3 for many years. He touched the lives of many young people as they learned everything from survival skills to character development.
In 2007, Neil retired and was richly celebrated for his 44-year career. He spent his time after retirement reading, hunting, spending time with family, and cheering for the Auburn football team.
Neil is survived by his children Lisa (John) and Shelley (Allison) and his grandchildren Cole, Jordan, Henry, and Christian. He is also survived by his sister Barbara and brother-in-law Andy.
Neil was predeceased in death by his adored wife Therese and his parents as well as his brothers-in-law Jimmy and Johnny.
Neil will be laid to rest at a graveside ceremony on Friday, September 13 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Montgomery Humane Society. Neil was an animal lover and passed this love on to his children and grandchildren.
Neil always made those around him feel special and valued. He will be greatly missed.
