Montgomery, Alabama. Born on December 20, 1954 in Montgomery, Alabama, Teresa spent most of her life in the capital city, the eldest daughter of Bonnie Parmer Hatfield and Gene Hatfield. Though she carried many titles, her most coveted were mom, “Hattie” to her granddaughter, sister, daughter and friend.
Teresa loved people—celebrating them, engaging in conversation with them, helping them, advocating for them, learning from them, cooking for them, laughing with them. She had a magnetic personality and knew no strangers.
A lifelong love of learning and spirit of curiosity led her through innumerable endeavors during her 70 years. From banking to politics, to a later-in-life molecular biology degree, to the founding of a blog and an embroidery business featured in Town & Country, Teresa was always learning and conquering something new.
Her love for the arts was endless, whether studying, enjoying, or creating. From painting, to needlepoint and embroidery, to cooking, decorating, and hosting, Teresa poured her talents and love into everything she created and shared them with the world.
Teresa grew up a member of Frazer Church, where she volunteered in the nursery taking care of babies (her favorite!). Her faith in God carried her through to the end of her battle with dementia. Her family takes comfort in the knowledge that she is in Heaven, fully healed and with her Savior.
Teresa’s grandparents, mother (Bonnie Jean Hatfield), and father (Albert Eugene “Gene” Hatfield) predeceased her. Left to cherish her memories and honor her life are her son, Joseph Bass and his family Lindsay (wife) and Chandler (daughter); her daughter, Angela Duke; sister Carol Missildine (Ted); sister Sue Stanley (Steve); and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Teresa’s family is forever grateful for the love and care she received in her final months from the nurses and staff of Merry Wood Lodge in Elmore County and ACG Hospice of Montgomery, as well as the prayers and support from friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests giving to Frazer Church, a pillar in the family’s life for generations (https://frazer.church/give) or The Gift of Life Foundation (https://www.mightycause.com/donate/Gol-Mgm).
A Memorial Service celebrating Teresa’s life will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Frazer Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
