It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Antonia Gattuso at the age of 93, on May 27th, 2020. Beloved wife of Antonio Gattuso who predeceased her in 2007. Antonia is mourned by her son Consolato, (Palma Caponi), and daughter Filomena (Albert Choate). Antonia loved her grandchildren dearly and took pride in providing them with the wisdom, love and care only a Nonna can provide. She will always have a special place in the hearts of her five grandchildren, Jessica (Michael), Antoinette (John), Nina (Jonathon) Marisa (Trent) and Anthony (Shannon) and her three great grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by her sisters-in-law Maria Gattuso, Angelina Gattuso, Nata Gattuso, Francesca Gozzi and brother-in-law, Giovanni Gattuso and her beloved sister Carmela Quirino and many nieces and nephews in Montreal, Chicago and Reggio Calabria.
Born on February 22, 1927 in Calabria, Italy, Antonia grew up in a family of ten brothers and sisters. She immigrated to Montreal as part of the wave of Italian immigrants with her husband Antonio and her two children. Arriving to Canada, with not much more than the clothes in their suitcases and a few dollars in their pockets, Antonia worked relentlessly to ensure that no matter the circumstances, dinner would always be served. Antonia was an intelligent, strong, caring generous, opinionated and emancipated woman but yet instilled the traditional values of respect, honor, and integrity in her children and grandchildren. Devout catholic, Antonia went to mass every morning at Notre Dame de la Consolata church until recently.
Antonia strongly believed in the importance of family and always loved Sunday lunches with her grandchildren. What a fabulous cook she was! Antonia was famous for her handmade pastas, sauces and cookies. Antonia always put everyone else first and would not sit down to eat until everyone had a second serving of her gnocchi. Antonia took pride in her vegetable garden and enjoyed sharing the fruits of her labor with her children and grandchildren.
Antonia stayed strong and true to herself until the very end, she will be missed dearly, but her memory and wisdom will love on forever.
A private viewing and visitation will be held on Tuesday June 2, 2020 at the Centre Funeraire- Cote-des-Neiges . A celebration of her life will be held in the coming months.
