It is with great sadness, I regretfully announce that Arthur Francis Galbraith, of Montreal, Quebec passed away on October 7, 2023, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer and a broken heart from missing Lana, his late wife of 59 years. He died peacefully, with his family by his side. Arthur is survived by his children Drew (Jocelyn), Derek, Stephanie, Susan (Sandeep), Shaun (Ron), Darren (Michelle), and Chantal, a special lady that he always considered and treated as one of his daughters. He will be missed by his 13 grandchildren, each of whom he loved dearly (Lana Elinor (Alex), Darren, Geneviève (Chris), Arianna, Arthur James, Maya, Lilly, Lena, Kyle, Chloe, Dylan, Jeremy, and Jackson), and his great-granddaughter, Teagan. Arthur was the son of the late Arthur B. and Mary V. Galbraith (nee Wall), he is also survived by his brother, Ronald (Beverly), and his dear cousin Inez Kemp (nee Galbraith; (late James)) who Arthur always considered his older sister. Arthur leaves us to be with his devoted wife, the late Lana Marie Galbraith (nee Corkery), who predeceased him in 2020, and his son, Daniel Kevin Galbraith (Katia), who predeceased him in 2016.
Born in St John, New Brunswick, he graduated salutatorian from St. Malachys Memorial High School in 1957. He then attended the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, graduating in 1961 with a Bachelors of Business Administration degree. He then completed his Chartered Accountancy qualifications at McGill University in 1964.
Arthur initially moved to Montreal with his wife Lana in 1961, then lived briefly returned to the Maritimes, living in Halifax, before returning to the Montreal area permanently. After raising their children, Arthur and Lana relocated to downtown Montreal, where they remained. Arthur and his wife Lana co-parented their eldest grand-daughter and his wife’s namesake Lana Elinor. Lana Elinor brought great joy and pride to Arthur. He spent much of his energy providing Lana Elinor with rich meaningful life experiences, wisdom and laughter. They shared a love of reading, books and music, which Lana Elinor continues to this day.
Arthur started his career as a Charter Accountant with Clarkson Gordon in Montreal in 1961. After a number of years, he shifted gears, left public accounting and went to the client side of the business, taking a role as the Chief Financial Officer with Coronet Carpets. In 1977, the entrepreneurial bug bit him and he started his own carpet business – Filament Yamaska. Following that, Arthur had a string of successful business ventures throughout his life. To this day, remnants of his previous businesses continue on in other successful organizations, namely Lanart Rug.
Arthur was an avid reader and loved to play cards with his children and grandchildren. His favorite card game was best looking, the high card was always the best looking. I will say, he won his fair share of those games with his brilliant blue eyes. Arthur was always an early adopter of new technologies. He was intellectual curious his whole life and was constantly learning about new things.
His legacy will be the positive impact he had on so many people’s lives. Arthur was fiercely loyal to the people he loved. We are all better for knowing him. We will all miss him dearly, but we take comfort that he is reunited with his true love Lana.
