Loving father to May (Stephen), Tamer (Gaëlle), and Rami (deceased) (Leslie). He is survived by his loving partner Alice Azar; sister Yasmine Haroun (Fahmi), sisters-in-law Afaf Attalla (Fares) and Nora George (William), and brother-in-law Fouad Surur (Nora); cherished grandchildren George, Alexander, Christopher, Annie, Bradley, Amy, and Kyle; his nephews and nieces Farid (Lara), Nadim, Nadine (Dan), Corinne (Jean-Marc), and Paul (Imke); and his grand nephews and nieces Brooke, Kiki, Vivianna, Paul, James, Laurian, and Catalina.
Distinguished architect, urban planner, and professor, Iskandar (Alex) began his career in Cairo, Egypt where he worked as an architect after obtaining an architecture degree from Cairo University. He later attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received Master’s degrees in both Architecture and City Planning followed by a PhD in City Planning. He then joined the faculty at the Université de Montréal where he spent thirty years, first in l’école d’architecture and then mostly in l’institut d’urbanisme, including a time as director.
A brilliant, artistic, and academic thinker, he was creative and curious and continued to share his passions of architecture, design, music, travel, and languages with everyone close to him until the very end. An exceptional problem solver, he was always available to listen, help analyze, and advise on any issue. Throughout his life, he ensured that family, friends, and colleagues were a priority. He was always happy spending time with young people and especially enjoyed laughing and joking with his children and grandchildren. He was the best Giddo and will be greatly missed.
