April 23, 1942 to March 26, 2025
My beloved father, Jean Louis (Luke) Van Gennep, a resident of Chartwell Le Prescott in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec, passed away suddenly on March 26, 2025 at the age of 82.
Born and raised in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Luke immigrated to Canada in his early 20s, becoming a proud Canadian in 1968. He lived in various cities, including Montreal, Cornwall, Ottawa, Toronto, Cambridge, and Vancouver, before returning to Montreal in 2020 to be closer to his family.
A mechanical engineer, he travelled the world, enjoying great adventures in places like South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Dominican Republic, Aruba, Chile, Iran, Hawaii and Australia. Luke excelled in problem-solving, notably tackling challenges with massive boilers in various industries, such as pulp and paper. He loved swimming, sailing and snorkeling. His favourite vacation was on Blue Lagoon Cruises in Fiji. Luke was passionate about technology, being among the first to own a personal computer. He also enjoyed photography, capturing life’s moments with enthusiasm.
Luke was predeceased by his cherished wife, Patricia Smith, his parents, Willem Karel Van Gennep and Catharina Ligtenberg, his beloved son, Allan Van Gennep (Suzanne) and his brothers, Jan Van Gennep (Ann) and Willem Van Gennep (Betha).
Luke is survived by his devoted daughter, Karen Van Gennep (Peter) and his loving grandchildren, Erin, Ashley and Nathan. He will be deeply missed by his brother, Marinus Van Gennep (Betty) and his former wife, Moira McCarthy.
There will be no visitation or service, and cremation will take place.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada would be greatly appreciated.
