Thomas Francoeur, 92, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on November 29, 2014 following a brief illness. Born in London, England to Leopold Francoeur and Gertrude Vitkovits. Tom is survived by his wife, Mary, 103 years old; his daughter, Sister Mary-Ellen; his son, Emmett and wife Patty; grandchildren Conall (Julie) and Maeve (Greg) and great-granddaughter, Keira. Dr. Thomas Francoeur was Professor Emeritus of McGill University. Through the roles of teacher, counsellor, mentor, spiritual director and retreat leader, Tom first and foremost tended to the care of souls. His guidance has brought thousands of students, clients and seekers of all kinds into alignment with the best of their human nature. His message of hope and consistent faith in the resilience of the human spirit extended beyond the classroom and counselling office to communities across Canada, the U.S. and Ireland. He earned his B.A. from the Seminary of Philosophy (Université de Montreal), a Masters and Doctorate in Education and a Masters in Psychology (Ottawa)-teaching at St. Joseph's Teachers College and then at McGill University. A man with a deep spiritual and religious sense, Tom was a clinical psychologist for countless Seminarians, Priests and Sisters, in addition to his lay practice. He was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the Montreal Archdiocese (Ignace Bourget Award, Bishop Crowley Award). Influenced greatly by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, this quote best reflects Tom's beliefs, "The most satisfying thing in life is to have been able to give a large part of one's self to others." Sincerest thanks to the staff of the Montreal General Hospital's ER, 15th floor and particularly Dr. Lawlor and Chaput and the Nursing staff of the Palliative Care Unit, for their exceptional care. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation is appreciated. Visitation will be on December 3 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Collins, Clarke, MacGillivray and White at 5610 Sherbrooke St. West. Prayer and reflections will occur at 8:00 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be on Thursday, December 4 at 1 p.m. at St. Monica's Church in N.D.G. (6405 Terrebonne, H4B 1A8).
