Robert G. Mitchell, affectionately known as Bob, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on November 19, 1928, in New York, NY, Bob was the cherished son of Martin and Annabell Courtney Mitchell, Irish immigrants whose faith, dedication, and warmth shaped his early life. His father, Martin, served as a policeman in the 17th Precinct, while his mother, Annabell, was a devoted nurse. The family’s brownstone, just two blocks from Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, provided the backdrop for Bob’s childhood, where he served as an altar boy and sang in the boys’ choir, nurturing a lifelong devotion to his faith.
After graduating from Saint Agnes High School, Bob pursued a Business degree at NYU. In 1950, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, training at Fort Pickett, California, to operate tanks. Twice his battalion prepared for deployment overseas, only to have orders canceled—a blessing that spared him from combat and reflected the guiding hand of Our Lord in his life.
In 1946, Bob met his soulmate, Joan Miller, on a blind date, and they married in 1951. Together, they built a loving home and raised three children: Michael, married to Bonnie Karst Mitchell; Martin, who predeceased him; and Suann, married to Dan Stewart. Bob cherished his role as grandfather to Kevin, Marty, and Sean, and as great-grandfather to Connor, Dylan, and Owen.
Bob enjoyed a distinguished 42-year career at IBM before retiring, leaving a legacy of dedication and integrity. Beyond his professional life, he was a pillar of his community: a Boy Scout Leader for Troop #17 for a decade, an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a pole worker for the Westchester County Board of Elections for 20 years, and a devoted member of both the American Legion and the National Maritime Society. Bob’s faith remained central throughout his life; he celebrated being an Irish Catholic in St. Patrick’s Parish since 1953 and generously offered his time whenever called upon.
Bob lost his sweetheart, Joan in December 2012. He is survived by his son Michael, married to Bonnie Karst Mitchell and daughter Suann, married to Dan Stewart, grandsons Kevin Mitchell, married to Allyse Hartman, Martin and Sean Stewart and great grandsons Connor, Dylan and Owen Mitchell. Bob is also survived by 7 nieces and nephews, 17 great nieces and nephews and over 20 great great nieces and nephews.
Bob Mitchell will be remembered for his unwavering faith, devotion to family, and tireless commitment to community service. He lived a life marked by love, integrity, and quiet strength, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 from 4-8pm at the Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 170 Kings Ferry Rd., Montrose, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Verplanck, NY with Burial to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery also in Verplanck.
