Brad was a wonderful, loving father to his daughter, Terry Van Den Heuval, and his son, Timothy Truitt. He was a proud grandfather of Nikki Bowen, Joshua Bowen, Angela Sawyer, Timothy Truitt Jr., and Benjamin Truitt. He also had 17 great-grandchildren and had a special relationship with each one.
He was the son of Leonard James Truitt, a plasterer by trade and Violet Margarita Truitt, a homemaker. He started working for the Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. in 1953 when he was 18 years old and was employed for 40 years by that company before retiring in 1993. He served his country honorably from 1956-1958 in the U.S. navy as a signalman aboard the USS Rankin.
Brad was a devoted believer in his lord, Jesus Christ, and his entire life reflected that love and worship of his Savior. He diligently studied the scriptures, and was an excellent Bible teacher to adult classes in several churches he attended, as well as teaching Bible courses at Baltimore School of The Bible in Baltimore, Md. He also served as a deacon in several churches, and the pastor of visitation in an assembly in Havertown, Pa., ministering to elderly shut-ins that could no longer attend Sunday services. His favorite Bible verse was Romans 8:32 - “He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him graciously give us all things?”
He enjoyed teaching and playing chess with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He never let them win, so when they finally triumphed, they knew they had truly beaten their mentor. In this, he taught them a great lesson for life, that practice and diligence in any endeavor, is more rewarding than any allowed, hollow victory. He also loved trivia games, crossword puzzles, and any thought challenging game. He remained mentally acute until the end, being able to recite long poems by memory and all verses of hundreds of hymns, his mind was truly exceptional.
After their declining physical abilities, Brad & his wife Carol went to live with their son Tim and his wife, Sandy in 2017. After Carol’s death in 2019, Brad longed to join her spirit in heaven. Every morning, he would sing the old gospel hymns as Tim fixed his breakfast. As he ate, Tim would read a portion of scripture and they would revel together in God’s truth. He also had regular weekly phone conversations with his beloved daughter Terry concerning the scriptures. This was his routine for the final 5 years of his life. He suffered a severe stroke Feb. 14th leaving him completely debilitated. He spent his last days in home Hospice care surrounded by his family, singing and rejoicing at the prospect of his spirit being soon with Carol and his blessed Lord. He left a lasting impact on all that he met with his witty humor and gracious spirit. He will always be remembered by his family for his generosity, grace and love. He was an example of a devoted servant of His Heavenly Master and will be missed by us all.
