

Lucille Cope New, 95, passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at Amorem Hospice in Valdese, NC. Lucille was born in Davie County, June 25, 1926, to Odell and Beulah Cope. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joel B. “Joe” New; brother Travis Odell Cope.
She is survived by son Joel C. New (Julie), daughter Rosemary New Southern (Scott), son Thomas Foster New, daughter Jennifer New Propst (David); grandchildren Ryan Scott Southern, Paige Southern, Jessica New Edwards, Ezekial Thomas New, Jacob Bennett New, Sally New, Tattern New, Ella New, Hanna Propst, Gabrielle Propst; great-grandchildren Cidian Edwards, Baxter Edwards, Mollora Edwards, Jackson Bennett New, Madelyn Ann New, Hudson Southern, Sawyer Southern; nieces Priscilla Johnson, Marilyn Reavis, Rebecca New, Janice Johnson, Georganne Williamson, Candace Thomas; nephews Mitch Cope, Tim Frye, John New, Neil McClanahan.
Lucille New lived the majority of her life in King, NC, and was honored as Woman of the Year in 1994 for more than 40 years of civic leadership and devotion to the advancement and promotion of King through the Northwest Development Association and other organizations. She held every office in the local Extension Homemakers as well as offices at county, district and state levels. She was honored to receive the countywide Leadership Award in 1988.
Her numerous accomplishments included teaching Sunday School for 50 plus years at First Baptist Church of King and serving as Girls’ Auxiliary Leader, and Girl Scout Leader. She was a charter member and officer of the King Woman’s Club and was cofounder and board member of the King Resource
Network.
Lucille was recognized in three editions of Who’s Who Among American Women.
In all her endeavors and duties, both official and unofficial, she sought to honor her community and help others recognize its potential as well as their own. She was a devout Christian, a good friend to many, a devoted wife and a wonderful mother.
The family wishes to thank the staff of The Berkeley of Morganton, NC, for their excellent care of our mother in her last years.
