

Ruth Cherry Gurley, age 85, of Glen Alpine, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2015 at her residence surrounded by her family. Ruth was born the daughter of the late Robert Cherry and Ethel Parrish Cherry on June 6, 1930 in Orange Park, FL.
Ruth was a longtime member of Glen Alpine First Baptist Church. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and quilting. Ruth was known for her gardening and for being an excellent cook. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Ruth will be greatly missed.
Along with her parents, Ruth is preceded in death by a son, Owen “Sonny” Frank Taylor, and five brothers.
Those left behind to cherish Ruth’s memory include her husband of 56 years, Glen D. Gurley, Sr. of the home; a son, Glen D. Gurley, Jr. of Glen Alpine; four daughters, Ruth Ann Blanton of Florida, Betty Jo Taylor of Wilmington, Marilyn Wilson and her husband, John of Kings Mountain and Carolyn Rector and her husband, Stanley of Salem; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.
A time of receiving friends for the celebration of Ruth’s life will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday at Kirksey Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Rd, Valdese, NC 28690.
Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton has the honor of serving the family.
