Thomas served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy and was retired from the Burke County School System.
Along with his parents Thomas is preceded in death by a brother, Gilbert Smith.
Those left behind to cherish Thomas' memory include his beloved wife, Rachel Rene (Smith) Smith of the home; a brother, Andy Smith and his wife Bea of Panama City, FL; two sisters, Nancy Leonard and her husband Michael of Morganton and Ollie Martin of Statesville; and a "Special Daughter", Rene McGalliard of Morganton. Thomas is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
