Jerry L. Horton of Mooresburg, TN, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of October 7th, 2023, after battling illness since April 2023. He is survived and will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Brenda J. Wheeler Horton, their daughters: Tracy Coffey (Mike,) Trisha Umanah (George,) Tania Bellamy, and Tina Patterson (James,) their grandchildren: Logan Johnson (Caleb,) Matthew Solorzano, Zachary Coffey, Sarah Bellamy, Jesse Bellamy, and Walter Umanah, and their great-granddaughter: Hunter Jane Johnson. Jerry took great joy and pride in his grandchildren and loved spending time with them, watching them play, and telling them many a tall tale.
Jerry was born on May 7, 1944, to his parents, Walter and Nell Horton, in Mooresburg, TN. He began working as a carpenter with his dad and brothers at the age of 16 and eventually became a licensed contractor and continued working in this field until his retirement, except for a two-year break he took to serve in the Marine Corps after being drafted during the Vietnam war.
Jerry was a devout Christian, and he and Brenda were long-time members of Buffalo Trail Baptist Church in Morristown, TN, where they loved serving the church before becoming too ill to do so. Though Jerry loved building and woodworking, he loved fishing even more. He spent hundreds of hours fishing with his wife and children, friends, and later with his grandchildren. It brought him much happiness to see them enjoying something he’d loved for so long.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the James H. Quillen VA MedicaL Center in Johnson City TN. Donations may be made by following this link: https://www.pay.gov/public/form/start/48003968/
