

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Goldsmith; his stepmother, Alice Goldsmith; his brother, Edward Jr.; and his sister, Donna Boyd.
A dedicated soldier and patriot, Joseph honorably served 24 years in the United States Army, retiring with the distinguished rank of Master Sergeant. His military career included three tours in Vietnam, as well as assignments in Germany, Hawaii, and Korea. His commitment to service extended beyond active duty, as he remained a lifelong member of AMVETS, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Vietnam Veterans of America.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Mary, who remained his steadfast companion through every chapter of life. Together they raised two children, Michael and Kristi. He was a cherished grandfather to Michael II, Alissa, and Breanna, and a proud great‑grandfather to three great‑grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Terry and Ray Johnston; seven sisters‑in‑law; three brothers‑in‑law; and numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him with deep affection.

Military graveside services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026 at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 2200 East Gov. John Sevier Hwy, Knoxville, TN.
