Virginia always said, even though she received a band scholarship at SMU, she never regretted staying home and raising her boys. She stood up for right and wrong and what she believed. When she was diagnosed with cancer, she never asked or questioned "why me." Virginia was a strong willed lady who even began the process of recycling before it became "green to do so," separating paper from plastic. She spent a great deal of time on the water and she and her husband were members of the Lake Charles Power Squadron. She and her husband, William spent their lives traveling all over the world, Tripoli, Libya, Ponce Puerto Rico etc. She lived a wonderful life.
Survivors include her loving husband of 52 years, William D. Gilbert of Sulphur; two sons, Jimbo Gilbert and wife Jill of Lake Charles and Bobby Gilbert and wife Melissa of Moss Bluff; one brother, Jim Bruce and wife Lori of Moss Bluff; two sisters, Margaret Cromwell and husband Bill of Lake Charles and Norma Boblett of Moss Bluff; five grandchildren, Kade, Kennedi, Haleigh, Beau and Gray. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Minervia Bruce; and one brother, Thomas "Benny" Bruce; and a brother-in-law, Harold Boblett.
A celebration of her life will be at 10:30am Friday, May 2, 2014, in Hixson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff. Burial will be in Old Ritchie Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday from 5pm to 9pm and will resume Friday from 9am until service time at the funeral home. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.
