She was born June 21, 1926, and raised in Muncie, Indiana, the daughter of Lloyd and Marie (Maston) O'Connell. Doris was a homemaker, and was married to her husband of 63 years, Charles P. Saylor, before his passing. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother of five.
Doris was a member of the Gold Star Mothers of Indiana and member of the Muncie Eagles Lodge for over forty years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Marie (Maston) O'Connell; one son, Charles D. Saylor, who was killed in Viet Nam in 1967; three brothers, Melvin O'Connell, Charles Ray O'Connell, and James A. O'Connell; one sister, Marjorie O'Connell Woods; her grandparents; and all of her aunts and uncles.
Doris leaves to cherish her memories; one son, Ray G. (wife Carol) Saylor; four granddaughters, Kim K. (husband John) Gibson, Melissa Saylor Wilson, Rhonda Saylor Bickford, and Darleena R. (Dar) Saylor; great grandchildren, Luke (wife Megan) Springer, Ceirah Grimm, Shaleenah (husband Lucas) Hanson, Mike Grimm, Megan (husband Jorge) Noble, Codie (wife Erica) Alford, and Kaylie Wilson; great great grandchildren, Christian Springer, Isabelle Springer, William Springer, Marshall Noble, Theodore Noble, and Westley Alford. She also leaves her companion and love of her life, her dog, Tye.
Life or death only occurs when the soul arrives or leaves the body. It happens in the blink of an eye. The one second it took for Doris's soul to leave her body, and the huge number of seconds she had lived, and no matter how horrible, how painful that the one second of her death was; it was nothing compared with the millions of joyous seconds of her life. So I will allow myself to grieve, but not for long. It will not be fair to my mother by letting that one second overcome the millions of seconds we all had with her. The death means little, the days we had mean everything.
