Earl was born April 4, 1934 in Markleville, IN, the son of Thomas and Ruth (Gibbons) Muterspaugh. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1952 and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Ball State University.
Earl was the loving husband of Anne Clark Muterspaugh and father of 3 daughters. He was a retired educator starting his career as a teacher in Yorktown Schools and moved to Royerton Elementary where he was a teacher and principal. Earl’s second career was in sales as a food broker until his full retirement in 1995. Earl will be remembered for his humor, great style, the ability to make friends with anyone in the room and his love for serving others.
He watched and learned the skill of gardening from his father. A skill he would carry out through his entire life. He had a large vegetable farm, where he grew every vegetable imaginable, including having an asparagus and strawberry patch. He was known best for selling fresh tomatoes, sweet corn and green beans to many in Delaware County.
Earl and his wife Anne were members of Friends Memorial Church where he often led adult Sunday School. Together they ran the church Food Pantry for 10 years and were also active members in the Second Harvest Food Bank. Earl was an avid Yankee’s fan his entire life and his wife shared his passion. They were known to always have a game on and have a score or stat to share. They were also avid BSU football, basketball and baseball fans. If they were not attending school events for their grandchildren or BSU sporting events, you could find them at a bridge table playing both in clubs and with friends.
He is survived by his daughters, Laura Clark Murphy and Marguerite Muterspaugh Carless (Don); son-in-law, Brent Tinder; his sister-in-laws, Julia Wadsworth (Bob) and Linda Muterspaugh, along with 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
