

Richard Lee Winkle passed away Thursday, March 31, 2023, on his 84th birthday, at Eskenazi Health Burn Unit as a result of an industrial accident. He was born in Muncie, the son of Hansford and Dorothy Hammond Winkle. Richard was a 1957 graduate of Cowan High School and a United States Air Force veteran.
He began his electrical engineering career at Muncie’s Westinghouse plant in the mid-1960s, then owned an electrical specialty company, Wincon Corporation, from the early 1970s until 1989. Richard’s later career consisted of employment and electrical contract work at local companies, most notably Reber Machine and Delaware Dynamics.
In 1975, he married Julie Dawson Winkle, spending 48 wonderful years together enjoying travel, aviation, and missions work. Theirs was a rich and rewarding relationship.
Glad Tidings Assembly of God has been Richard and Julie’s church home for many decades. Among Richard’s passions were supporting Camp Agaiutim Nune (Assemblies of God) in the Yukon delta region of Alaska. For 11 summers, he labored and shared his design, construction, and electrical talent to help build and improve the camp which provides both a recreational and spiritual experience for Eskimo children. He was an accomplished archer, winning several awards in his age class including 2016 National Field Archery Association’s, Indoor National Champion Master Senior Male Freestyle Limited.
Surviving are his wife Julie Winkle; his daughter Amy Winkle; special nephew John W. Dawson, Jr.; two brothers- and sisters-in-law, James & Wilda Dawson and Jary & Jeannie Dawson; numerous nieces and nephews; many cousins; and countless treasured friends including Jim & Linda Schulz, missionaries in Alaska.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers—Bob, Jerry, and Phillip; and brother-in-law John W. Dawson, Sr.
Calling will be 11 am to 2 pm on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at Glad Tidings Church, 3001 South Burlington Drive, Muncie, Indiana 47302 with funeral services to follow at 2 pm. Pastor Kevin Holt will officiate. Burial follows at Elm Ridge Memorial Park.

Elm Ridge Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Richard.
