Robert James Courtney's life was defined by the guiding principles of faith, family, service, and philanthropy. Bob mixed in a lot of his Irish humor and storytelling as well during his 97 years on earth.
Bob was a devout Catholic and never missed a chance to attend Mass. During his last few months when he could not attend Mass, he looked forward to when his daughter Susan brought him Communion at Morrison Woods.
He served faithfully at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for over seven decades. Bob volunteered for many years on Parish Councils, while working tirelessly on fundraising campaigns with his annual talks at Mass. He used to say at age 80, he was one of the oldest altar boys at St. Mary’s.
Although he loved the Good Lord endlessly, it was his special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary that struck deep into his heart. He carried his Rosary daily and was often fond of saying “Don’t forget the Virgin Mary when you are saying your prayers. She is listening, too”. Bob made sure on every trip that three Hail Mary’s were offered up for safe travels.
Bob's greatest treasure was his wife Betty, whom he married 72 years ago in Harrisburg, PA. She stood faithfully by his side and Bob made sure he complimented her daily, while professing his love for her. Rarely would you see Bob around town without Betty at his side, holding hands. They were a magical couple that even a Hollywood movie could not produce.
Bob’s love extended further to his six children, 20 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Bob always put his family first and made sure they were leading good, happy and faithful lives. He loved attending many sporting events and activities of his children and grandchildren while also being a helpful babysitter. Along with many wonderful family trips he provided, Bob loved taking fall trips to Notre Dame to see the Irish play. He had a deep appreciation for western films and was often regarded as a contemporary equivalent of John Wayne.
His generosity knew no bounds whether it be time, talent or treasure. Along with countless charities, Bob always offered a helping hand no matter who needed it. He was quick to pick up every restaurant check, golf fees and filled up gas tanks for the kids when they were in town. He conducted many fun contests for the family throughout the years.
Bob, a native of Altoona, PA came from a large Catholic family. In 1959, he came to Muncie and started General Vending Services with his brother Richard D. Courtney (deceased). The company later merged with Servomation Corporation and the Courtney brothers grew the vending company into one of the finest in Central Indiana. He worked hard at his job and always made it to family dinner each night. He retired in 1992.
Bob, a 1952 graduate of St. Francis College (PA), proudly served his country in Korea. His master storytelling delighted the family with many tales of his 2-year stint overseas. He was one of four brothers who served in the military. Three of his grandchildren also served in the military.
During his retirement years, Bob continued to serve the Muncie community as a longtime volunteer at Meals on Wheels and Ball Memorial Hospital. Bob enjoyed playing golf, talking about cars, playing cards, telling jokes, and always spending time with any family members that were around. He also was a master of wonderful sayings such as:
“Winners make things happen, losers let things happen”
“When you start to think, you start to think”
“The well-dressed man has the advantage”
Robert is survived by his wife Betty (Gannon), as well as children Bob (Karen) Courtney, Jr., Susan (Shawn) Kerrigan, Sharon (Brian) Toepp, Linda (Randy) Collier and Daniel (Karen) Courtney. One infant son, Kevin, proceeded him in death. He considered his three sons-in-laws and his two daughters-in-laws his own children and not extended family. His 20 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren put a smile on his face until his passing.
Robert used to quote from the Bible “You know not the day, or hour so make sure you appreciate every day.” He did that for 97 wonderful years.
The family expresses gratitude to the wonderful and compassionate staff who rendered loving care to Bob during his time at Morrison Woods. Special thanks to Heart-to-Heart Hospice who provided care to Bob in his final days.
