Virgil L. Maxwell, 83, Muncie, passed away Wednesday evening, May 8, 2024, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
He was born Thursday, May 30, 1940, in Monticello, Kentucky, the son of John and Dovie (Morrow) Maxwell. Virgil loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. His favorite times were playing ball with the grandkids, (he even played softball until he was seventy-five years old), working in his gardens, watching and feeding the birds. He also enjoyed working on his John Deere tractor and his cars, especially his ’57 Chevy. Virgil was very active in his church and served as a Deacon for many years. He met his wife to be, Velma, at church and they were married on December 19, 1962. His memberships include the Freedom United Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Velma Maxwell; daughters, Julie (husband, Terry) Dobbs, and Tammy, (husband, Dan) Lewis; sister, Dicie Phillips; grandchildren, Amanda (husband, Brian) Small, Christina (husband, Karac) Aynes, Michael (wife, Renice) Dobbs, Tiffany Lewis, Nathan Lewis, and Lawrence Wolf; great-grandchildren, Landon Aynes, McKenna Wilson, and Norah Aynes; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dovie Maxwell; several brothers, and several sisters.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana 47304 with his son-in-law, Pastor Dan Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Memorial Park.
Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, at Elm Ridge Funeral Home.
