Born in Appleby on January 24, 1920, Althea attended schools in Appleby and Nacogdoches. After high school, she worked as a car hop on roller skates at Stripling's Drug Store and later as a telephone operator at Bell Telephone Company.
Althea married Billie Brady Campbell on January 18, 1945. She accompanied her husband to California and Florida while he served in the U.S. Navy. Always adventurous, Althea traveled alone by train to meet Billie in California.
After World War II, the couple returned to Nacogdoches where Billie became a dairyman and chicken farmer. Althea was a devoted wife and mother and an excellent seamstress. They were members of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church and Rock Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
When her husband accepted a position with International Drilling, Althea and their two daughters accompanied him on his business travels in many parts of the world although most of the employee's wives did not move with their husbands to live in a third-world or foreign country. The Campbell's have lived and worked in Trinidad-British West Indies, Iran, Mozambique, Oklahoma, Angola, and Nigeria but always returned home to Nacogdoches.
Althea was appropriately named after a flower because she loved gardening and continued to do so until age 91. She was a fanatical follower of the Dallas Cowboys and their poor performance of the last few seasons seemed to contribute to her failing health.
Althea was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Alicia Drgac of Austin and Susanne Green of Nacogdoches, three grandchildren, Christine Lea Drgac of Austin, William Brady Green and Joseph Martin Green, both of Mineola, one great grandchild, Cody Jay Drgac of Austin, nephews James Maedgen of Louisiana and Joseph Maedgen of Missouri, and nieces Laura Harris of Houston and Mary Stewart of Sugarland.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012, at Cason-Monk Metcalf Sunset Chapel located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches and interment will follow at Rock Springs Cemetery.
Friends are invited to a visitation on Friday, October 26, 2012 from 6-8 pm at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.
