Edna Eveline (Gill) Smith was born on September 24, 1938, in Houston, Texas, to Harvey and Bernice (Joslin) Gill. She passed from this life on January 18, 2026, in Nacogdoches, Texas,
at the age of 87.
Born and raised in Houston, Edna attended M.B. Smiley High School. She was baptized at the old Osteen Church in Houston. In the mid-1970s, she moved her family to Nacogdoches, where she built a life rooted in hard work, faith, and devotion to family.
Edna was employed at Nacogdoches Medical Center for more than 30 years. There, she found her calling as a Nurse Tech, a role she performed with deep compassion and pride. She held especially fond memories of caring for newborn babies, a reflection of her nurturing spirit.
To all who knew her—as a mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend—Edna was the kindest soul. She would give anything she had to help someone in need. She was a fiercely loving mother who always placed her children’s well-being above her own. During difficult times, she made sure her children were fed, even if it meant she went without. She believed deeply in fairness and love, ensuring that what she did for one child, she did for all.
She is survived by her daughters, Charlotte Perry and Danielle Montgomery; her son, Michael Blanton and wife Leann; her grandchildren, George Perry and wife Liz, Chasity Denny and
husband Curtis, Lace Holloway and husband Matt, Dallas Putnam and husband Matt, Brandon Blanton, and Destiny Harrison and husband Andy. She is also survived by many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, as well as her loving nephew, Charles Lee Gill and wife Stacy Gill, and nephew David Gill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Bernice Gill; her husband, Dalton Smith; an infant daughter; her brother, Charles Gill; and her sons-in-law, George Perry, Sr. and Vernon Montgomery.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Splendora City Cemetery in Splendora, Texas.
Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
