George Lafayette Shumate Jr.

Mr. Shumate was born May 4, 1918, in Appleby, Texas, to parents George Layfayette Shumate Sr. and Constance Emily Adams Shumate. He resided in Nacogdoches and had been a former resident of Houston and Porter.

He loved and took great pride in his family and church. George loved life, especially when he was gardening, fishing, hunting, traveling, and spent time with family and friends.

He retired from Hughes Tool as a machinist and maintenance supervisor after 39 years of service.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ruby Oberia Till Shumate. . In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Fred Shumate; and sisters, Iris Smith, Annie Wiggins, and Ruby Lee.

His survivors include his children, Sandra Lewis and husband Drew and Billy George Shumate Sr. and wife Dorothy; grandchildren, Teri Lynn Shumate McCalip and husband Todd, Billy George Shumate Jr. and wife Karla, and Christopher Lewis; and great-grandchildren, Alexandra McCalip, Hannah McCalip, Trey McCalip, Victoria Shumate, Benjamin Shumate, Hunter Shumate, Hayden Shumate, Tanner Shumate, Aaron Shumate, Braden Shumate, Christian Shumate, Dalton Shumate, Makenna Shumate, Kolton Shumate, Colton Lewis, and Hunter Lewis.

Services are set for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2015, at North Street Church of Christ, 3914 North St., Nacogdoches, Texas 75965 with Bill Sherrill officiating.

Interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery in Appleby.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2015, at the church.

Pallbearers will be Chris Lewis, Todd McCalip, Trey McCalip, Bill G. Shumate Jr., Benjamin Shumate, Hayden Shumate, and Hunter Shumate. Honorary pallbearers will be Teri McCalip and the remaining great-grandchildren
