Jeanette (Sojourner) Warner was born July 30, 1938 in Longview, Texas, the daughter of Clifford and Opal (McSwain) Sojourner. She passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at home in Martinsville. She had attained the age of 85 years.
She attended Texas State School for the deaf in Austin, Texas. Here she met her husband, Gordon Warner—the love of her life. They were married on September 21, 1957 and were together for 39 years before he passed in 1996.
They had four children and Jeanette was their homemaker. She and Gordon were HEAVILY involved in every aspect of their children’s lives. They attended all of their sporting events, their daughter’s musicals, plays and band concerts—they loved their children. Both Gordon and Jeanette were deaf and at that time, there were no interpreters of the deaf and yet, they still were involved. They both volunteered with the Nacogdoches Regional Day School Program of the Deaf, they were on the advisory committee of the Nacogdoches RDSPD and they both got donations from a local grocery store in Center to help with the Pen Pal Picnics of Nacogdoches RDSPD. After Gordon’s passing, Jeanette occasionally was involved with Nacogdoches RDSPD. She visited the campuses and shared deaf culture and stories with the students. She attended the Pen Pal Picnics, and they both volunteered at Camp Sign of the Deaf. They were the “Grandparents” of Camp Sign although they did not have any grandchildren at that time. They were both members of the Hurst Street Church of Christ. Gordon and Jeanette had a strong faith in God. They made us WARNER kids go to church every time the doors were opened. Jeanette had always put her trust and faith in God. She especially did this during her time of illness. When she was losing her vision/sight, she was so courageous and strong. She never felt sorry for herself. She always relied on HIM for peace and understanding. She and Gordon passed that faith on to us WARNER kids.
Jeanette is survived by sons, Wallace Warner of Martinsville and Ronnie Warner and his wife, Rhonda of Huntsville; daughters, Joanna Jordan and husband, Leslie of Lufkin and Suzanne Warner of Martinsville; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Cindy Zinnell of Overton and Sheryl Deases of Victoria; grandchildren, Shelby Jordan of Lufkin and Chelsea Mott of San Antonio; and one great grandchild, Lilliana Mott.
She is preceded in death by her father, Clifford Sojourner, mother, Opal McSwain Parmer, husband, Gordon Warner, one brother, Jimmy Parmer and her father and mother-in-law, Hale and Lillie Finley Warner; brothers-in-law, Terry Garland Warner, Neil Warner, Daniel Warner, and James Warner; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Anderson, Agnes Dry, and Pat Clendennen.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 13th at 2:00 p.m. in Mount Herman Cemetery located in Shelby County. Howard Galletly will be officiating over the service with Ella Higgenbotham acting as Interpreter.
