Lane Walker Cox was born July 23, 1948 in Nacogdoches, Texas to Elton Walker and Delma Chisum Cox of Woden, and died December 13, 2025, in Houston, Texas. He was a member of New Hope Church in Nacogdoches, Texas. He grew up and attended school in Woden, where he played on the basketball team, and was quite the athlete. He won all tournament in every tournament he ever played in. He was popular among friends, and it was through two of these friends, Charles Wayne and Jerry, that he met the love of his life, Carolyn Meador. She was fourteen and he was sixteen when their love story began. Lane graduated high school in 1966 and went straight to work at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Nacogdoches. He had a strong work ethic and was a character. Everyone loved his jovial personality. He was always cutting up, telling tales and jokes, but when a job needed to be done, he was the one to call. People could depend on him to get it done right. He was drafted for the Vietnam War soon after he began his career with the telephone company. He served the United States Army from 1968 – 1970 and was chosen for the prestigious Honor Guard that Guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. While serving in the army he married Carolyn on July 19, 1969. After his time in the service, he came home and went back to work at Southwestern Bell. He and Carolyn built a life in Woden, where he served in many capacities. He was on the Woden ISD School Board from 1977-1994 and he helped start the Woden Fire Department that is still going strong today. Together he and Carolyn had two beautiful children, Michael and Sherri. He loved being a dad and enjoyed helping with the local boy scout troop. He enjoyed camping with the boys and teaching them all about the outdoors. He felt like a big kid right along with them. As a young man he loved anything outdoors, mainly fishing and hunting, but he also had a heart for watching his cows, humming birds and deer, which he treated as his pets. He instilled this love of nature and outdoors in Michael. He loved taking him hunting and fishing. After spending thirty years with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, he retired. His favorite thing to do as he got older was to spend time with his grandkids. He loved watching them play sports, and although his body was failing him, he made every attempt to be there to cheer them on. They could talk him into most anything they wanted. They were his pride and joy.
