

He was born on November 5, 1934, in Houston, Texas, to Nelson Davis Carney and Billie Martin Carney.
Memorial service for R.L. will be at 2 P.M. Saturday, April 11, 2015, at Cason Monk Metcalf Sunset Chapel (5400 North St, Nacogdoches) with Ellis Reynolds and Bill Sherrill officiating.
R.L. founded Carney Roofing Company in 1962 with family and enjoyed working with many local businesses. After graduating from Texas City High School in 1953, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served from 1953 to 1956. During his service, he attained the rank of staff sergeant and participated in the Korean Conflict. R.L. enjoyed fishing the Gulf Coast, his dogs, coaching his sons’ little league sports teams and traveling with his wife, Tommye.
R.L. was a loving husband. He had high expectations for his family members and was proud of their accomplishments. His wife and best friend, Tommye Fuller Carney of Nacogdoches, survives him. He is also survived by his children and grandchildren: Steven (wife Heidi; son and daughter Brian and Meagan); Matthew (wife Dee; daughter Kristen, son-in-law Anthony Morales, and son Matthew Ryan); Gregory (wife Susie; son Colton), stepdaughter Tamela Childers Moss (husband Greg; daughter Tori), and stepson Derek Childers. His brothers and sisters survive him: Wallace Carney, Barbara LaLena, Phillip Carney (wife Sheila), Sue White (husband Carroll) and Pauline Carney. R.L. also has many nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to list but not forgotten.
He is reunited with his father and mother, Gary Carney (brother), Phyllis Carney, (sister-in-law) and Charles Lalena (brother-in-law) who preceded him in death.
His family will receive friends on Saturday, April 11, from 1 P.M. - 2 P.M. at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel.
