

Mr. Murrell was born Oct. 3, 1927, in Nacogdoches County, Texas, as a son of the late Noah Harmon Murrell and Sallie Fore Murrell. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he settled in the Houston area. He lived there many years working as a heavy equipment operator, often known as “Drag Bucket” or “Wawa.” Walter had lived in Angelina County for the past several years after retirement. He enjoyed horseback riding and often participated in trail rides.
He is survived by his daughter, Connie Curtis of Highlands, Texas; sisters, Lois Johnson of Mount Enterprise, Texas, and Opal Adams and Nina Wilson, both of Nacogdoches, Texas; grandchildren, Devin Walker with wife Elia and Kelly Solis with husband T.J., all of Highlands, and Carrie Hall with husband Philip of League City, Texas; and 10 great-grandchildren, Anthony Solis, Keely Walker, Alex Solis, Kody Walker, Shaymus Solis, Citlila Lara, Julius Solis, Xavier Walker, Zoe Walker, and Aralynne Hall.
He was preceded in death by his parents, in addition to a daughter, Jo Ann Murrell; a brother, Ottis Murrell; and sisters, Helen Carter, Cleo Mullen, and Tessie Phillips.
Funeral services are set for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas. Interment will follow at Gravel Ridge Cemetery, located on FM 225, west of Nacogdoches, Texas.
Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 25, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches.
