Bernhard Robert Martens, known affectionately as Benny, was born in Homestead, Florida, on September 2, 1938, and passed away on November 13, 2025, at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his father, Bernhard J. Martens; his mother, Emma E. Martens Jaensch; his sister, Gerda Martens Hall; and his beloved wife of 50½ years, Carole Joan Templer Martens.
Benny is survived by his daughter, Meredith Koeval of Advance, North Carolina; his son, Robert “Robbie” Martens (Andrea) of Homestead, Florida; and his precious granddaughters, Callie and Holly Koeval and Cadence Martens, who lovingly knew him as Poppy.
As a young boy, Benny spent his summers as a camper at Camp Pinnacle in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and later returned as a counselor during his teenage years—experiences that fostered his lifelong love of the outdoors. A dedicated and hardworking farmer, Benny devoted his life to East Glade Growers, running the farm successfully alongside his mother and sister, and later with his son Robbie.
Benny was an avid hunter and fisherman who found joy and peace in the woods and on the ocean, always sharing these adventures with his son, Robbie. Whether surrounded by family or friends, he treasured the time spent in nature doing what he loved. He also cherished his daily afternoon phone calls with his daughter Meredith, when they would catch up on the day and enjoy each other’s company. Benny was a man of few words, but great presence,
filled with generosity, and a steadfastness that touched everyone who knew him. His love for his family ran deep, and his absence will be felt profoundly. He will be greatly missed.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Caballero Rivero Palms Woodlawn. A service will follow on Friday, November 21, 2025, at 10:30 AM, with the Reverend Bill Baggett officiating, and burial immediately afterward.
