You both showed love not with big speeches, but with open doors, open hands, and open hearts. You gave us fruit you had grown with care, stories we didn’t even know we were part of, and a sense of belonging that I still carry today. That kind of love doesn’t disappear. It lives on — in Zia Pina, in our family, and in all of us who were lucky enough to be loved by you.

Thank you, Zio. For everything. For the memories, the laughs, the lessons, and the love. And thank you, Zia Pina, for being his partner in every one of those gifts.

Dear Zio Orazio,
It’s still hard to believe you’re gone. The thought of not seeing you again — not hearing your voice, your laughter, or seeing that quiet strength in your eyes — doesn’t feel real. You weren’t just the heart of the family; you were part of its soul. But I know, truly, that everything you gave us — you didn’t give alone. You and Zia Pina gave with one heart, one home, one love. Everything that felt special about being with you — the warmth, the generosity, the laughter, the food, the fruit, the comfort — it came from both of you, together.

When I was little, we didn’t live close by. Being in Italy, it wasn’t easy to visit often, but whenever we had the chance — we couldn’t wait. It was a big deal. You always opened the door with love, not just to me, but even to my parents long before I was born. That meant so much. Every visit to your home felt like something sacred — like stepping into a different world where family meant everything and love was lived, not just spoken.

And the most beautiful part is that the same way you opened your doors to us, your kids have continued to do the same — and they’ve been doing it forever. That spirit of generosity, of family, of making everyone feel welcome… it lives on through them.

I still laugh thinking about one of those moments — I must’ve been what, five or six? I climbed onto that cherry picker in the backyard, playing like it was some kind of amusement ride. I fell off, of course — and Zio, you got so mad! Not in a scary way, but in that protective, no-nonsense way that only you could. You were right — it was dangerous — but looking back, it was one of those moments that sticks with me. I see it now for what it was: a memory of you caring deeply, even when I was just being a little brat who didn’t know better. That memory makes me laugh now — and I cherish it.

Mio carissimo Zio Orazio,  un vero gentiluomo Siciliano - un uomo di famiglia devoto e lavoratore instancabile che ha vissuto la vita con passione e scopo. Un uomo di grande integrità, da adolescente mi era difficile capirti, ma crescendo, ho imparato ad ammirare e apprezzare profondamente i valori che incarnavi. Conservo con affetto i ricordi dei nostri momenti insieme a Homestead, dove Alessandro e io trascorrevamo ore a parlare di vita, famiglia e passato. La tua risata fragorosa alle sue storie ancora risuona nella mia mente. Quei momenti senza pretese giocando a carte, condividendo un bicchiere di vino e godendoci le piccole gioie della vita erano momenti che avrei tesaurizzato per sempre.
Il tuo amore per la terra e la famiglia era evidente in tutto ciò che facevi, dalle cure dedicate al frutteto al portare a casa pomodori e melanzane fresche e baciate dal sole per la mia bella Zia Pina, che preparava i tuoi piatti preferiti. Il modo in cui accoglievi e amavi i miei ragazzi, insegnando loro lezioni preziose e condividendo la tua saggezza, era veramente commovente. La tua gioia era particolarmente palpabile durante il Natale, quando le tue sorelle riempivano l'aria con le loro risate e calore. Non dimenticherò mai il modo in cui li guardavi con tanto amore e adorazione.
Marco Island era un rifugio speciale per te e Zia, un posto per avere la famiglia tutta per voi. La tua devozione a Nanna era ispirante, e il modo in cui trascorrevate le domeniche con lei, andando a messa e facendo brunch, mostrava il profondo rispetto e amore che avevi per lei. Eri un uomo di forti valori e principi, e la tua prevedibilità era una presenza confortante nelle nostre vite.
Zio, ti ricorderemo profondamente, ma so che sarai sempre con noi nello spirito. My dearest Zio Orazio, you were a true Sicilian gentleman, a devoted family man, and hard worker who lived life with passion and purpose. A man of great integrity, I struggled to appreciate as a teenager, but as I grew older, I came to deeply admire and cherish the values you embodied. I treasure the memories of our time together in Homestead, where Alessandro and I would spend hours talking about life, family, and the past. Your hearty laughter at his stories still echoes in my mind. Those effortless moments playing cards, sharing a glass of wine, and savoring the simple pleasures of life were moments I'd treasure forever.

Your love for the land and your family was evident in everything you did, from tending to the grove to bringing home fresh, sun-kissed tomatoes and melanzane for my beautiful Zia Pina, to whip up your favorite meals. The way you welcomed and loved my boys, teaching them valuable lessons and sharing your wisdom, was truly heartwarming. Your joy was especially palpable during Christmas, when your sisters would fill the air with their laughter and warmth. I'll never forget the way you'd look at them with such love and adoration.

Marco Island was a special haven for you and Zia, a place to have the family all to yourselves. Your devotion to Nanna was inspiring, and the way you'd spend Sundays with her, attending Mass and brunch, showed the deep respect and love you had for her. You were a man of strong values and principles, and your predictability was a comforting presence in our lives.

Zio, you will be deeply missed, but I know you'll always be with us in spirit. On my next visit to Homestead, I'll close my eyes and see you standing just after the gate, welcoming us with your warm smile, one hand in your pocket, and the other waving above your F&T Farms cap. You'll always be there, in my heart and in the memories we shared. Riposa in pace, caro Zio.
