

A graduate of Cooley High School, Arch began his education at Wayne State University before gaining a private pilot’s license and joining the Michigan National Guard in 1941. At the start of WWII, he entered the flight training program of the Army Air Corps, a proud member of the first class of the “Sergeant Pilots”. From there, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to the 82nd fighter group, 95th squadron in the EAME Theater. Over the years, Arch served as test pilot, maintenance officer, fighter pilot in his beloved P-38’s and squadron commander. After the war he was transferred as Captain to the U.S. Air Force and served until 1948 at Kessler Air Field Mississippi.
While serving in the Air Corps, Arch met and married his beloved wife of 60 years, Anita Cochran, who was serving overseas in the Women’s Army Corps. She preceded him death in 2005. Following his time in the service, Arch worked at the Ford Motor Dearborn Assembly Plant, in Detroit, while attending night school to finish his education at Eastern Michigan University. He retired as Material Manager after 35 years.
Arch and Anita then moved to Gallatin, Tennessee and became devoted members of the First United Methodist Church in Hendersonville. The Companions Sunday school class walked steadfastly with Arch during Anita’s lengthy illness.
Arch was a strong and fearless man, who walked in faith and was completely devoted to his family and his country.
In addition to his dear wife, he was predeceased by his sister, Lois Jane Haig and his grandson, Grant Bannen. He is survived by his three daughters, Susan Bannen, Sandra Baggett (Dennis) of Jasper, GA, and Marianne Hippe (Randy) of Fernandina Beach , FL. Son – in- law, Thomas Bannen, 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and loving caregiver, Cindy Neil.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, February 22, 2016 at 11: 30 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church Nashville – Stanford Chapel with visitation following the service. The Rev. Sandra Randleman, officiant. Committal at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the Woodcrest Health Center, for the eight years that Archie was lovingly tended by staff, along with many courageous companions and friends who shared his life. Also, with loving thanks to Cindy Neil.
