Barry L. McGrath, 58, of Brentwood, Tennessee, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, kindness, and a zest for life that touched everyone who knew him. Born on November 19, 1967, in Fontana, California, Barry was the beloved son of Irma McGrath and Barry J. McGrath.
Barry graduated from California State University, Fullerton, with a Bachelor of Science degree in International Business. His professional life was as unique and diverse as he was—working as an estimator in the construction industry, spending over a decade as a commercial salmon fisherman in Alaska, and driving a school bus during the off seasons. He embraced every role with dedication, humor, and a sincere love for the people around him.
Those who knew Barry describe him as a hardworking and honest man, someone whose sharp wit and warm personality made him a joy to be around. He was the “cool uncle,” faithfully showing up to cheer on his nieces and nephews at their events, always ready with a joke, a smile, or a story. Barry loved unwinding with friends over a craft beer at the end of the day, sharing in laughter and camaraderie.
Barry lived life fully and passionately. He enjoyed snow skiing, mountain biking, backpacking, attending live music concerts, and cheering on his favorite teams—the L.A. Rams and the L.A. Dodgers. He also loved creating videos of his fishing adventures and family gatherings, capturing the moments that meant the most to him.
Barry is survived by his father, Barry J. McGrath; his sister, Cristina McGrath Brunet; his brother, Walter McGrath; his niece, Jacqueline Brunet; and his nephew, Timothy Brunet. He is preceded in death by his mother, Irma McGrath, as well as his grandparents, Agnes and Walter McGrath and Leonardo and Raquel Padilla.
He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Though his life was cut short, Barry showed all who knew him how to live with enthusiasm, authenticity, and heart.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 12:00 noon at Holy Family Catholic Church in Brentwood, Tennessee. After the Mass, all are invited to join in a celebration of Barry’s life at the Hop House in Franklin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Foundation in Barry’s memory.
