

Charles Maurice Johnson – passed away March 6, 2015. He was 97 years of age and was a longtime resident of Richland Place Retirement Community, which was designed by his architect son, having moved there in 1993. Preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Grace Talley Johnson and his wife of 50 years, Martha Jean Cawthon Johnson. Survived by two sons; local architect, Charles M. Jr. (Vikki) and retired Assistant Director of Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Nat E. (Jane); four grandchildren, Taylor Johnson, Preston Johnson (Erin), Keats Leach (Phil), Whitney Johnson; great-granddaughter, Collins Grace Leach; and dear friend and companion, Helen P. Black.
Mr. Johnson was born in rural Montgomery County on what he affectionately referred to as “The Tin Cup Hollow Farm” which was the Johnson family home. He moved to Nashville at an early age and graduated from East High School in 1935 with its first graduating class. He was a 4 year veteran of WWII, serving in five major European Campaigns including the Battle of the Bulge during which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for valor. He was employed by the Veterans Administration in 1946 and participated in the approval of the first GI loan made in Tennessee. He retired in 1977 after having served many years as the State Director of the VA Loan Guaranty Program.
After his retirement, he opened his own real estate appraisal business and actively continued in that business until he was 90 years old.
He was an avid golfer and hit a hole-in-one when he was 85 years of age.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at Calvary United Methodist Church, of which he was a member for over 50 years, having served in numerous capacities. Visitation with the family will be at the church one hour prior to the service and one hour following the service.
