Heidi Lowenthal, born Hildegard Dorothea Teutsch on January 22, 1943, in Reghin, Transylvania, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026, in Nashville, after a remarkable life defined by resilience, adventure, creativity, and love.
Born during a tumultuous time in history, Heidi’s earliest years were shaped by extraordinary courage and perseverance. In 1945, as a young child, she fled Transylvania with her brothers and sister to Gallspach, Austria, alongside her family in search of safety and a new beginning. In 1956, she emigrated to the United States with her parents, her three youngest brothers, and her sister, settling in Alliance, Ohio, where she began building the next chapter of her life.
A gifted student with a lifelong love of language and learning, Heidi earned her degree in English from University of Mount Union (then Mount Union College). Her adventurous spirit led her to join the Peace Corps, where she met James Lowenthal during training. Together, they served in Zinder, Niger, where they were married in 1969, beginning a lifelong partnership grounded in shared purpose, curiosity, and a love of the wider world.
Following their Peace Corps service, Heidi and James returned to Ohio, where their first child, Yuri, was born. They later moved to Nashville, James’s hometown, while he completed his PhD, and welcomed their second child, Sonya. Their family life would continue to span continents, including years in Arlington, Virginia, Niamey, Niger from 1981 to 1985, and Rabat, Morocco where they lived from 1990 until James’s death in 1998. Heidi later returned to Nashville, where she remained for the rest of her life, surrounded by her friends.
Heidi found joy and purpose in the beauty she created and the care she gave to others. She was an avid gardener whose hands could coax life and color from the soil. She was an exceptional chef and baker whose meals and desserts brought comfort and celebration to family and friends alike. Deeply compassionate, she volunteered with the ASPCA and at the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, reflecting her lifelong love of animals.
Her creativity knew no bounds. Heidi quilted and knitted lovingly for family and friends, leaving behind handmade treasures that will continue to warm hearts and homes for generations. Artistic, imaginative, and generous, she infused everything she touched with beauty.
Above all, Heidi will be remembered for her resilience, her adventurous spirit, and the quiet but profound ways she cared for those she loved. From a childhood marked by displacement to a life richly lived across countries and cultures, she embodied grace, strength, and enduring kindness.
She leaves behind her beloved son, Yuri (Tara), her cherished grandson, Sagan, and her daughter Sonya Rowe (Jim), along with family and friends across the world who will miss her deeply and remember her always.
Her life was a testament to courage, creativity, and love—a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held later this summer.
