Lucille met David Cole when they were students at Austin Peay University. The moment David met her, he knew he would marry Lucille. They wed on November 7, 1947. During their early years they lived in Chicago, Mobile and Atlanta. They settled in Nashville in the mid-fifties where they raised their children and spent the best part of their 63 years together.
A member of First Presbyterian Church since 1956, Lucille’s faith was central to her life. She taught Sunday school, volunteered with the Stephen Ministries and participated in mission programs around the world. The Church’s work in Cuba was particularly important to her.
With a welcoming warmth, Lucille opened her family and home to exchange students, foreign grad students and world travelers. She considered Steen Palsbøll, Patrick Fusilier, Bente Ploug and their families part of her own.
Lucille discovered tennis at fifty and played passionately well into her seventies, forming lasting friendships on and off the court.
Lucille possessed a personality larger than life and a sense of humor to match. She would like to be remembered as someone who approached life with a curiosity and openness to learn. Thoughtful, dedicated, forgiving, progressive and loving. These are qualities she leaves behind.
