Born on Oct. 24, 1931, to Jack Phillip and Rossie Ellithorpe Wehby in Nashville, he was a graduate of Father Ryan High School (1950) and the University of Tennessee (1954). He married Barbara Ann Baltz in 1957 at the Church of the Assumption and they had four children.
Mickey was an ROTC member in college and a lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served as a forward observer for the 555th Field Artillery Battalion (“Triple Nickel”). “We were expendable,” he would say. Later he was a Certified Public Accountant, working as associate and partner at prestigious firms before founding his own. After retiring, he spent most of his time in St. Petersburg, FL, frequently seen on the golf course.
A standout football player at Father Ryan, Mickey was an avid sports fan. It was hard to pull him away from the television set when Tennessee football or a golf major championship was being aired.
But it was his family members who brought him the most joy. He loved their visits and was particularly proud of his grandchildren. According to a grandson: “Until the end, he lived life on his own terms and was a tremendous inspiration to our family. He was fearless, casually catching sharks and stingrays on the Florida coast, and always spoke his mind unapologetically. I will miss his genuine, caring nature and quick-witted one-liners.” Since both of his parents died at 94 years of age, he always joked that “the Wehby warranty runs out at 94!”
Mickey is survived by his former spouse: Barbara Baltz Wehby; daughters: Margaret Sutton and Monica Wehby; sons: Michael (Tracy) and John Wehby; grandchildren: Jacob, Jared, Sarah and Daniel Wehby Grant, Zachary Wehby Sutton, Amelia and Jack Wehby and great-grandson Sawyer Wehby.
In addition to his parents, Mickey is preceded in death by his siblings: Jack, William and Samuel Wehby, Dolores Young and Shirley Welch.
Visitation will take place on Monday, March 9, from 4-8 PM, with Rosary at 6:00 PM at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place the following morning; Tuesday, March 10, at 11 AM at Christ the King Catholic Church.
