Mildred “Polly” McKenzie, beloved wife, mammy, mother, sister, cousin and friend, died suddenly Oct. 3 at her home in Nashville. She leaves behind a large, grieving family and many saddened friends. She was 72.
Mildred Pauline Boner was born Jan. 16, 1949 to Joe Boner, Sr., and the former Mildred Irene Jones in Nashville, TN. Both preceded her in death, along with her brothers Ronnie and Joe. She was a graduate from Central High School.
In 1971 she married U.S. soldier Andrew Davis McKenzie. They settled in Nashville to begin their big, colorful family of loving children and grandchildren who only knew her as their “Mammy,” and to whom she sang to each their favorite lullaby, “You Are My Sunshine.”
Over the years, she was a popular staff member at International Clinical Laboratories, the Diocese of Nashville, The Tennessee Register and Christ the King School, where she fed hundreds of hungry students as director of food services.
The family will hold Visitation on Wednesday, Oct. 6, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Christ the King Church parish hall. The funeral Mass will be Thursday, Oct. 7, 11 a.m., in the church. The family will receive friends and family at 10 a.m. Long-time friend Rev. Patrick J. Kibby will preside. Brother-in-laws Rev. William L. McKenzie will preach and Rev. Mr. James McKenzie will be deacon of the Gospel. Clergy of the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Nashville and Knoxville will attend and concelebrate.
Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Mrs. McKenzie is survived by her husband, Rev. Mr. Andrew McKenzie, and two sons, Andrew Davis, Jr., and William Matthew (Shaina). Her daughters are Tracy Latitia (Jimmy) Newlin, Theresa Dawn (Jason) Tyler, Rachel Irene (Rich) Mathew and Claire Marie McKenzie.
