Paul Samuel Redelheim was born July 6, 1945 in Coral Gables, Florida. He was raised and educated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a proud graduate of Class 220 from Central High School, and received his B.A. and M.Ed from Temple University. He received his Ed.D degree from the University of Georgia. Before coming to Vanderbilt University, he taught at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1976 he joined the faculty of Peabody College where he was an Assistant Professor of Special Education, and Director of Special Education student teaching. In 1981, he was awarded the Chancellor’s Cup which is an annual honor given to the faculty member making the greatest contribution outside the classroom to undergraduate student-faculty relationships. Because he was so instrumental in facilitating the merger between Peabody College and Vanderbilt University, he became the only non-Vanderbilt faculty member to receive this prestigious award. Later in his career, Dr. Redelheim specialized in Quality Improvement and worked for HCA, and St. Thomas Hospital. He retired from Vanderbilt University Hospital in 2006. Dr. Redelheim died at home, surrounded by loving family and friends on February 7, 2018 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He is survived by his mother, Phyliss Redelheim of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; his wife Carol (Hassenstein) Redelheim of Nashville; son Seth (Nicole) Redelheim, and grandson Samuel Redelheim of Atlanta, Georgia, daughter Alison (Justin) Atwood of Nashville; step daughter Molly Baringer, step-son Rob Baringer, both of Nashville; brothers David (Joan) Redelheim, of Delray Beach Florida, and Daniel (Nora) Redelheim, of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Dr. Redelheim was predeceased by his father Phillip Redelheim and his brother Jonathan Redelheim. Services will be held at Congregation Micah on Tuesday February 13, 2018 at 3:15. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Peterson for Parkinson’s Foundation www.petersonforparkinsons.org

I had a great friend in Paul and will always remember him as a person that made me smile. We met through racquetball and grew a friendship that was always surrounded by laughter. He was the Tennessee Racquetball Association leader and I ran the Memphis Racquetball Association back in the day. Played a lot of doubles in tournaments together and enjoyed a great camaraderie in and around the sport. In the early stages and through the progression he would tell me things that were happening to him and make it humorous, knowing his level of intelligence, he knew where it was going but still could relate to the happy side of his life. I respected that more than words can say.

Paul was my supervisor at St Thomas and was wonderful to work with. I remember him as a fair and honest person with a great sense of humor. He treated everyone in our office with respect.

For some three years Paul was the supervisor for the Quality Resources Department at St Thomas Hospital. Not only was he our supervisor, but he was our friend. He was always so kind and caring to us all and taught us so much. My prayers are with his family as I know you will miss him greatly. He will always be in our hearts.

From Camp Eden in Hancock, NY - 1956, to 1958 - 60 at Camp Shawnee in the Poconos, we remember Paul so well as such a great kid! We still see his mom, and continue to share our wonderful camp memories with the Redelheim family. Our deepest condolences to his dear family. May his memory be for a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

I have great memories of playing basketball with Paul and his brothers at Camp Shawnee in the Poconos near Stroudsburg, PA, back in the late 1950s and early 1960s. I'll be keeping Paul and his family in my thoughts and prayers.
