We are heartbroken to hear of Dr. Burk’s passing. The Burks have been close friends of our family for as long as I can remember, and we all have very strong, fond memories of our times together.

Some of my favorite were visiting Nashville as a child and going around town with Eni, and, after my parents moved to Chicago, spending every Christmas Day with Ray and Eni. Those were some of our favorite Christmases, and the Burks played a large role in each and every one of them.

Our most special memory of Dr. Burk was at our wedding, where he played a central role. In Indian tradition, the bride’s maternal uncle performs several important parts of different ceremonies- from the puja the day before the wedding ceremony to walking the bride down the aisle. My uncle could not make it to my wedding, so Ray and Eni stepped into that role without hesitation. We will always remember Dr. Burk walking me down the aisle- his graciousness and enthusiasm to be a part of our wedding speak to the kind of person he was and the love and kindness he spread. He will truly be missed, but the kindness he spread and the legacy he left will carry on in the people he impacted. Sending love to the entire Burk family.

Dear Eni, Teresa, and Family,

I am very saddened to hear about Ray's passing.  I learned a great day from Ray. More about life, than about science. I learned the lessons he was trying to teach me too late in life. I know this is a difficult time for his family. I hope my thoughts, and all of the thoughts of those who loved him will help to lift you up during these difficult days.

Tarun and I feel privileged to have met Ray Burk and his family soon after arriving to the USA.  What started out initially as a relationship between a boss and an employee very quickly blossomed into one where Ray became my mentor and example to follow. In a very short period, the Burks became very close family friends that kept close ties even as we moved to different cities in our professional endeavors. I looked upon Ray as an older brother who was always there to offer advice and guidance. Indeed, in keeping with the Hindu religious custom, it was Ray who stepped into the role of my brother to give away our daughter, Mira, at her wedding.

 We will always remember Ray for his outstanding clinical research career and making many contributions of the highest caliber toward understanding of the role of Selenium in health and disease. Ray will also be in our memories as a very humble, compassionate, genuinely caring and very friendly individual. His irreplaceable qualities and persona will be sorely missed.

Ray was right there offering guidance and wisdom from when I was a graduate student at UT-Southwestern in Dallas, then as a medical student at UT-San Antonio, and later as a faculty member in the GI division at Vanderbilt. He supported me whenever I needed him and was tirelessly dedicated, generous, and kind. He cared deeply and wanted to be sure that I and others who trained under him were on track to have successful careers. What an honor it was to be able to spend time with Dr. Burk. He was a gentle man, whose smile emitted kindness. His love for his wife and daughter was clearly evident and ultimately inspiring, as was their love for him! I am honored to have known him, and will always remember him smilingly. Rest in True Peace, Dr. Burk!
