Richard Norvell

Mr. Norvell is preceded in death by his parents , Margaret Parker and Richard Norvell, his step mother, Jessie Armistead Norvell Clift, his wife Mary Elizabeth Manning Norvell. two sons, Owen Maury Norvell and Richard Manning Norvell. His two sisters , Margaret Norvell Spurrier and Anne Gayle Norvell and his brother , William Edmund Norvell, also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his daughter Margaret Parker Norvell, seven grandchildren, William Moulton Ward,Jr. ( Louise) Los Angeles, Maury Ward Woolwine ( Mark), Sherry Norvell Wilson ( Anthony) Atlanta , Ga, Richard Manning Norvell Jr ( Daphne ) ,Charles Parker Norvell Columbus, Ohio. Catherine Elizabeth Norvell and Jessica Ann Norvell and seven great grandchildren.

He attended Duncan Preparatory School and Vanderbilt University where he was a member of the SAE fraternity.

Mr. Norvell served as a Captain in the Army Air Force during World War II flying throughout Europe and the Far East. At the completion of his service he joined the Air National Guard and then re-enlisted during the Korean War.

Returning to Nashville after World War II he became Vice President of Norvell and Wallace Lumber Company which had been founded in 1880 by his family and the Joseph Wallace family.

Mr. Norvell also founded Norvell Wood Products, a pressure treating plant.

Active in state and local politics he was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1965 and served for 4 years. He was very active in the City of Forest Hills. He was elected a Commissioner in 1961 -63 and served as Vice Mayor of Forest Hills from 1963—65 and Mayor from 1983-88.

Red loved his country, the United States of America, and loved to read patriotic books . Until recently he was an avid golfer . He loved his lifelong friends and looked forward to lunch at the Belle Meade Country Club and sitting at “The Ole Boys” table every Friday He was a member of Belle Meade for over 70 years.

Mr. Norvell was very active in various lumber associations . He was a founding member of The Cedar Creek Yacht Club and held memberships in The Lions Club and the Nashville Downtown Rotary Club. Most recently he was active in the Battle of Nashville Preservation Society, Inc . Pallbearers: William M. Ward Jr, Mark Woolwine, Anthony Wilson, Richard M. Norvell, and Parker Norvell

The funeral mass is to be celebrated at ten-thirty a.m., Thursday, the 19 of July at the Cathedral of The Incarnation with Rev. Patrick Kibby, Celebrant. Internment will be held Thursday following the service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family request with gratitude that contributions be directed to Cumberland Heights or Alive Hospice or the charity of your choice.
