

Ruth Allen Obit Ruth Litton Gordon Allen, 88, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2017. A seventh generation Nashvillian, Ruth married Nashville Banner sportswriter Edgar Allen in August 1946. They were married 62 years until his death in 2008. Ruth was also predeceased by her parents, James Camp Gordon, Sr. and Anna Marie Riley, daughter Katherine (Katie) Marie Allen, sisters, Louise Gordon Corcoran and Dorothy Sue Gordon, and brother, James C. Gordon, Jr. Survivors include son Edgar C. Allen, III (Kathi) and daughter Susan Allen Huggins (Bill), grandchildren Jessica Rice (Keith), Jana Allen, William Allen (Lindy), Allen Huggins (Maggie), Ruth Huggins and eight great-grandchildren. Born December 11, 1928, Ruth was a stalwart of the East High School class of 1946 and served as Class Secretary. She was Head Cheerleader, played on the basketball and tennis teams and earned multiple class superlatives including Best All Around. For her entire adult life, she was part of the “Lucky 13 Club,” a group of 1946 alumnae. Ruth worked for the Metro Government for nearly 20 years in the Parks and Finance Departments. A life-long Episcopalian, she was a long time member of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church, where the Gordon family accounted for a significant majority of the Church Choir. She was also active at Calvary Church, Louisville and Church of the Advent, Nashville. Ruth’s family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at Brookdale Assisted Living and Alive Hospice for the care and comfort they have provided her. A memorial service for Ruth will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the Church of the Advent, 5501 Franklin Pike, Nashville, TN 37220. Visitation with the family 9:00 – 11:00 before the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Church of the Advent or to the charity of your choice.
