Born March 24, 1972 in Flagstaff, Arizona to Jenice and Wally Kohler. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree History and later a Masters Degree in Teacher Education. She began her teaching career in Sahuarita, Arizona. Vanessa had such a soft gentle voice that once her mother asked the principal how could she possibly be an effective teacher. She replied that Vanessa was indeed a wonderful teacher and that her quiet demeanor required her students to listen and pay attention.
Vanessa married and several years, 2004, had her daughter, Konner. Only months later Vanessa was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. As a toddler, Konner would plead with her mother "don't be sick mama." Vanessa's battle with cancer lasted 19 years and we believe Konner's well-being was her driving force to survive.
Vanessa and Konner moved to Nashville in 2014 to be close to her mother, who had suffered a life changing injury. She found her dream job teaching history at Renaissance High School in Franklin, Tennessee. There she found an inviting, enduring environment which fostered a career of service and purpose. She loved her students and fellow staff members and they loved her back. Many were able to make it to the hospital just before she died.
Vanessa was self effacing, genuine, and polite.
She had no need to "earn" anything nor prove "worthy."
She was simply, purely, herself.
Vanessa, you will be missed.
Thank you to Dr. Abramson, Dr. Wierum, everyone at Vanderbilt infusion center and to all the professional caregivers over these many years.
A celebration of life will be held at Renaissance High School, Franklin, TN on September 5th, 2004 at 6:00 PM.
