William (Bill) Disspayne died Sunday, February 7, 2021. His wife, Linda, son David and daughter Kathleen were with him as he died peacefully. Bill had dealt with health issues for over 29 years but he always had a positive attitude and a smile on his face.
Bill retired in 2000 as a Guidance Counselor and tennis coach at Hillwood High School. He continued to play golf with many of his friends from Hillwood.
Bill grew up in Donelson where his father Elmer Disspayne owned Disspayne’s Service Center. He went to Washington in the late fifties where he was a Senate page for both Albert Gore, Sr. and Estes Kefauver. When Bill returned from Washington to Donelson High School he met his high school sweetheart Linda Binns to whom he was married since 1964.
Bill was the oldest of six children of Elmer and Thelma Disspayne who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by brother, Donald Disspayne and sister, Debbie Disspayne Jones. He is survived by wife, Linda; son, David Disspayne (Laurenn); daughter, Kathleen Disspayne; grandchildren, William Disspayne, Catherine Disspayne, Mason Southall, Gray Southall, and Madding Southall; sisters, Wallis Carol Everett and Diane Disspayne Carter; brother, Elmer Disspayne, Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. His Cincinnati nieces and nephews called him the Candy Man because of his ability to pull candy and quarters from their ears. They genuinely thought he was magic.
Bill loved his family, friends, tennis, golf, bird watching, traveling, entertaining, and good food. He looked forward every year to going to Arkansas with the Hardy Boys for a week of golf, fishing, and telling stories. He was a great storyteller and they were all at least 50 percent true. It would take him hours to get through the grocery store because he stopped to talk to everyone. He was genuinely interested in hearing about people.
Bill was married to Linda for 56 years. They loved traveling and entertaining. They were able to travel to over 23 countries and make new friends and wonderful memories along the way.
A Memorial Service will be held in the late spring and hopefully people will bring the funniest and best memories of Bill. He was a fun loving gentleman who told great stories had an amazing smile and a positive attitude. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
He had exceptional health care over the years. A special thanks to Dr. Sean Ryan, Dr. Keith Hagen, Dr. Tony Meluch, Dr. Todd Bauer, and Dr. Chris Jones for their compassionate care.
