A. A. McClanahan, Jr., and Mildred Trenary McClanahan, and by his wife of over 55 years, Thelma Davis McClanahan.
A devoted and loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and spouse, Bill is survived by three sons, Bill Jr. (Susie), Steve,
and Bob (Susan) McClanahan, six grandchildren and seven (soon to be eight) great-grandchildren. Bill was born in Ft. Worth, Texas
while his father was attending the Southwest Seminary College there. Bill grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee,
where his father was a minister at the Chamberlain Road Baptist Church, and his mother was the church organist.
Bill attended one year of college at Wake Forest College (now Wake Forest University) before joining the U.S. Army.
He served in the European theater during the last few years of World War II, earning a purple heart for injuries sustained in battle.
Upon his discharge, he attended and graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in mechanical engineering.
He also played first base for the Commodore’s Baseball Team. During that time, he fell in love with Thelma Anna Davis
and they married on January 12, 1948. He soon began a successful career as a heavy equipment salesman with Thompson and Green Machinery Company. With his knowledge and expertise in earthmoving and landscaping, he developed real estate in the Nashville area over the course of five decades. Working with his wife, Thelma, as a partner, he developed Trailmont Park in Goodlettesville, Kingston Park in Kingston Springs, and Northfork Properties on Springfield Highway. As busy as he was with his business endeavors, Bill always made ample time to spend with his family.
His greatest joys were at gatherings of the family at home in Nashville, at extended family reunions in Springfield, TN, and at vacations with his family to Hollywood Beach, Florida, Fripp Island, South Carolina, or wherever the family could gather.
Bill and Thelma were founders and charter members of Brook Hollow Baptist Church. They helped to gather members and raise funds to begin the church in 1954. They remained lifelong devoted members of Brook Hollow. Bill and Thelma were also longtime members of Hillwood Country Club, where Bill served as president in 1993. Celebration of Life Service will be held at Brook Hollow Baptist Church on Thursday, July 2nd at two o’clock in the afternoon, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
Gathering of family and friends will be on Wednesday, July 1st from four o’clock until seven o’clock at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Brook Hollow Baptist Church at 678 Brook Hollow Rd., Nashville, TN 37205. Visit the online obituary: www.woodlawn-roesch-pattonfh.com
