Agnes will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 66 years Frank, son Rolf, daughter Sandra, son-in-law Gordon Wiebe and many friends and relatives.
She was predeceased by her parents Marianna and Ludwig Guse and brothers Paul, Robert and Edmund.
On December 11, 1927 Agnes was born in the village of Rudinka in Poland. Her family moved to Wedelheine, Germany to build a new life. Agnes’s mother died when Agnes and her brother Edmund were young children.
As Agnes grew into an independent young woman she dreamed to travel. At age 26, she set her sites on Canada from the urging of a friend. Together with her friend and others, Agnes immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1953. A grand undertaking and journey for a single young woman of her generation!
Meeting Frank Fixar in 1953 in Winnipeg changed her life forever. They married on September 17th, 1955 and welcomed their first child Rolf in 1956. Sandra was born in 1965 and made their family complete.
Always proud of her European heritage, Agnes was also thrilled when she became a Canadian citizen in January of 1958.
Looking after her family and making each house they lived in into a comfortable home was her career. A love of baking created many tasty treats. Her Christmas shortbread was a family favourite. Holiday meals were planned with delicious dishes and presented with precision. Having family and friends enjoy a meal around their dinner table always brought much joy to Agnes.
There was a love to go shopping and find the perfect gift for a loved one or just the right outfit for her children or herself! Agnes always knew just what bus route would get her downtown to Eaton’s, The Hudson’s Bay or to Simpson Sears at Polo Park!
Her personal style never waivered. Always stylish and never a hair out of place! Dressing up to go out for a night of dancing with Frank was a special time for her.
A love of flowers and gardening was always evident in their yard. Beautiful varieties and colours of flowers abounded. Agnes always looked forward to late winter when she would travel to Moosehorn, Manitoba to help her cousins in their greenhouses.
Knitting was one of her favourite past times especially when she was watching her afternoon soap operas. Many hats, scarves and mitts were made during episodes of General Hospital, One Life to Live and most recently The Young and Restless and Coronation Street!
Over the years there were memorable trips overseas to see family and road trips to Michigan to visit her cousins who had the best peaches and blueberries! Winter vacations included Arizona and a trip to Cuba with friends.
At every gathering Agnes would be the life of the party always able to engage in conversation with anyone and everyone. She had the unique ability of remembering every detail of one’s life and could have the most interesting conversations with all!
In 1974 Frank and Agnes decided to build a 4 season vacation cottage at Lee River. The family spent many summers enjoying the beach, fishing and cross-country skiing throughout the winter.
Eventually this would become their permanent family residence in 1989. As always, Agnes and Frank would make it into a comfortable year round home. Their yard was a park like setting surrounded with mature trees, gorgeous flowers and a vegetable garden that was the envy of many.
Then the time came for yet another move in 2017 into Lac Du Bonnet, Manitoba. A lifestyle change into condo living with an amazing view over the lake. A gourmet kitchen kept Agnes busy cooking and baking and a large balcony offered a place for her many flower pots.
Agnes lived a life of good health over the years. A fall in 2017 that resulted in a shattered shoulder did slow her down for a bit but she never let it stop her. A few weeks ago she was already planning the menu for this holiday season!
In her last few months, Agnes resided at The Kin Place Personal Care Home and passed away at The Selkirk Regional Health Centre. The Fixar family extends much gratitude and thanks to all of the health care professionals at both facilities who cared for Agnes with so much compassion and professionalism.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Agnes’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
