On Monday, August 14, 2017, at Concordia Hospital, surrounded by her family, the Lord took to Himself our very dear daughter, sister, sister-in-law, and aunt, and great-aunt, Fenny Kuik, just four days short of her 65th birthday. In recent months, Fenny suffered a number of strokes from which she did not recover. Fenny will be lovingly remembered by her father, Gerrit Kuik, her siblings Grietje Gortemaker, Davida (Bruce) Tuininga, Henrietta (Bill) Raap, Jake (Carolyn) Kuik, Ben Kuik, Anita (Allan) Vanderveen, and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Fenny was predeceased by her mother Johanna Kuik, her brother-in-law Bill Gortemaker, her nephew Craig Vanderveen, and her niece Amy Gortemaker.
Fenny was born on August 18, 1952, in Carman, Manitoba. As a child, she suffered many bouts of serious illness. In August 1958 the family moved to Winnipeg so that Fenny could attend the Manitoba School for the Deaf. At the age of 17 Fenny went to work at Premier Printing, a company owned by her father. She was employed there for over 40 years. For the past few years Fenny was in the care of Cornerstone Christian Care Society. There she got to know and grew very fond of her housemates and caregivers. She was a faithful member all her life of the Canadian Reformed Church, first in Carman, then in Winnipeg.
Fenny enjoyed many things, especially her little and not-so-little nieces and nephews (and later their children), her pets, puzzles and games, visiting family and friends, and receiving mail for her birthdays and at Christmas. She really enjoyed her semiannual stays at her cousin Dorothy’s farm. Fenny always had a very winsome smile for everyone.
The family expresses special thanks to the staff of Cornerstone Christian Care Society for their loving care the past few years. Our sincere gratitude, too, to Dr. Kuegle and the nursing staff at Concordia Hospital N3E for their compassionate care during her recent hospital stays.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Fenny’s memory may be made to Cornerstone Christian Care Society, P.O. Box 367, Carman, MB R0G0J0.
Viewing will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy 1 East at Navin Road, just inside the Perimeter.
The funeral service will take place on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at Redeemer Canadian Reformed Church, corner of Dugald and Bates, Winnipeg, Rev. J. Poppe officiating. Interment to follow at Green Acres Cemetery, Hwy 1 East at Navin Road, just inside the Perimeter.
