Peacefully, with her family by her side, Maria Fagundes passed away on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 86 years of age. She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, José Fagundes Sr., her three brothers, José Lourenco, Joao Goncalves and Francisco Lourenco, and her four sisters, Maria Jorge, Luciana Flores, Lidia da Silveira and Evelina Fagundes.
Maria was born September 30, 1927 in Fajã Grande, Flores, Açores, Portugal. She immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1960 with her family in search of a better life. She first worked as a seamstress for 12 years, then as a housekeeper at Misericordia Hospital for over 30 years. Maria belonged to the CWL and the women's craft group at St. Bernadette Parish, and volunteered at Winnipeg Harvest. Her very energetic and hard-working nature was known to everyone who met her.
Maria was very proud of her roots and took pleasure in telling stories to her friends and grandchildren about her past. Over the years, she and her husband travelled often to the Açores for vacation. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking Portuguese dishes, gardening, knitting, and spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandson.
Even though Maria is no longer with us, her memory will live within our hearts forever. She'll be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her son José (Carol) Fagundes, grandchildren Michael (Shawna) Fagundes and Lindsay (Dan) Eekhoudt, and great-grandson Pierce Eekhoudt.
The Fagundes family would like to thank Dr. Neal Lerner, as well as the nurses and staff on Cornish 5 at Misericordia Health Centre for all of their kindness and respectful care. They'd also like to thank all the friends and family that visited her over the past year.
A celebration of Maria's life will be held at St. Bernadette Church on Friday, February 28 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Misericordia Health Care Foundation or a charity of your choice.
Pallbearers will be Michael Fagundes, Daniel Eekhoudt, Tony Nascimento, Daniel Russell, John-Paul
Cardoso and Chris Rueckert.
