Wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Maureen passed away peacefully at the age of 93 after a long full life.
Maureen was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years – Ted - after his passing 15 years ago. Maureen was a devoted wife and mother. She will be sadly missed by her family who loved her deeply: her children Laurie (Greg) Messer and Dean (Kathy) Hilditch, her grandchildren Cory, Justin and Jennifer Hilditch, Michael Messer, Lauran (Cody) Mymko, and her great-grandchildren, Tyson and Jace Hilditch, Charlie and Joey Mymko.
Mom was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Bert Barker. Mom leaves her nephews Paul (Ana Marie) Barker and Blake Barker and grand-nephews, Jordan (Christine) Barker and Nicholas (Karlo Gemania) Barker and great grand-nieces and nephew, Chloe, Florence and Jonah Barker.
Mom was born in Winnipeg on April 3, 1932 to parents Albert and Lily Rhodes who had immigrated to Canada in 1917. Mom attended Greenway, General Wolfe and Daniel McIntrye Schools. After graduating high school, mom attended Angus Success Business College and worked as a secretary for an encyclopedia company before marrying.
Mom and Dad married on April 13, 1957 at Harstone United Church in Winnipeg. Mom liked to say she married her family paperboy having known our dad since elementary school. Married life bought many adventures and travel living in McGivney, Regina, Germany, London, Ottawa and finally back to Winnipeg in 1975. While living abroad, mom and dad loaded up the camper and spent summer vacations traveling across Europe with two kids in tow.
Mom enjoyed her career in Winnipeg in public relations with Transport Canada for many years before retiring in 1990. Mom and dad enjoyed spending time at their cottage at Grindstone Provincial Park and travelling in their retirement to England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and spending many winters in Penticton and Florida.
Mom was always active in the United Church no matter where she called home. She was never without being on one committee or another. She mostly enjoyed being the toy shopper for the Outreach Christmas Cheer Board Hamper Committee - spending hours shopping for toys and hosting the gift wrapping in her home. We will always remember the excitement of Christmas Day when mom would dress up in some crazy costume for the family gift exchange. Mom could always be counted on giving a laugh to all who knew her. Who can think of anyone who dresses up as a cheerleader for a Grey Cup Sunday and runs through the middle of a church service yelling, “Go Bombers Go!” That was Mom!
As per mom’s wishes cremation has taken place.
We would like to thank Dr. Mark Elkin, WRHC home care workers, palliative staff at Riverview Health Centre and Rev. Dr. Michael Wilson for the care mom received.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd. A reception will follow the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heritage Fund, Charleswood United Church.
