

Saliem Fissehatsion Samra was born on January 1, 1993, in Keren, Eritrea, to her father, Fessehatsion Samra, and her mother, Asmeret Samra. She was a cherished member of our family and community, known for her kindness, warmth, and unwavering love for those around her.
Saliem completed her elementary, junior, and secondary education up to grade 11 at St. Joseph’s De Lasalle Brothers School in Keren, Eritrea. She completed one year of Grade 12 at Warsay Yikealo Secondary School Sawa in 2011.
After successfully passing the Grade 12 national exam, Saliem joined Adi-Keih College of Arts and Social Sciences and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Eritrean Language and Literature on July 2, 2015.
Following her graduation, Saliem taught at Sawa Warsay Yikealo Secondary School for three years, where she was awarded the Exemplary Teacher Award in 2017. In 2018, she moved to Asmara, where she worked in the Department of Documentation and Preservation of Eritrean Historical Literature.
Saliem married her beloved husband, Hiyab Awshek, on February 16, 2020. After a long ordeal, she was finally able to join him in Canada in November 2023.
In a tragic and unforeseen event, Saliem passed away on January 7, 2025, in Winnipeg, Canada.
Saliem is survived by her husband, Hiyab Awshek; her son, Beraki Hiyab; her mother, Asmeret - Hagos; her Siblings, Meharena, Tiblets, Emnet, Yakob, Isaac, Tihtina and Yaried.
A funeral service will take place at St. Paul the Apostle Parish Catholic Church, located at 2400 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3J 0M8. The service will begin at 11:00 AM and conclude at 12:15 PM. Saliem will be laid to rest at Green Acres Cemetery, 1 Green Acres Ln, Navin, MB R5T 0H2, with interment at 1:00 PM.
