

He was born on August 6, 1926, in Boonville, IN, to the late William Elzie Miles and Irma Belle (Feagley) Miles.
Besides his parents, Carl was preceded in death by Emma Lou (Broeker) Miles, his wife of 56 years, his son, Alan D. Miles, a half-brother, Cleatis L. Miles, and brothers, David H. Miles, and Jack E. Miles.
Carl proudly served in the US Army from January 1945 until November 1946. He was handpicked as a guard for General John R. Hodge, as well as a technical clerk for the Battalion, in Seoul, Korea.
After being discharged, he enrolled at Indiana University, in Bloomington, IN, where he received a BS in Education in 1951, and an MS degree in 1955. Carl later completed 65 hours above his master’s degree. He was licensed to teach chemistry, English, general science, and physics. He also held a counselor’s license, as well as a secondary principal’s license.
In 1988, Carl retired after teaching for 37 years. He taught for 3 years at Paoli High School, in Orange County, IN, and 34 years in the New Albany Floyd County School Corporation. He taught junior high science for 1 year at The People’s College on Spring Street, and 33 years as a general science teacher at Hazelwood Junior High School in New Albany, IN. Carl was part of the original teaching staff when Hazelwood first opened its doors. He also taught adult night classes in English, stenoscript, and biology for 30 years.
Upon retirement, Carl pursued his many hobbies and interests. He had several fossil and rock collections that he had excavated during his teaching career. He created many beautiful works using calligraphy, water and oil painting, fine woodworking, chip carving, and scroll saw work. Carl also researched a detailed genealogy for both his and Emma Lou’s families.
Carl was a life member of the National Education Association, a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association, the Indiana Classroom Teachers Association, a former president of New Albany-Floyd County Education Association, and a former president of UNISERVE.
Carl was a member of DePauw Memorial United Methodist Church, New Albany, IN. He was the first president of the DePauw Memorial Methodist Men when it was organized in 1957.
Carl had a deep and abiding faith. He enjoyed sharing the Upper Room Devotional with his caregivers at Autumn Woods. The family wishes to thank Southern Care Hospice Services, and his "guardian angel" nurses and aides at Autumn Woods.
Carl is survived by four daughters, Ruth Fort (Arthur), Baton Rouge, LA, Brenda Miller, Elk Grove Village, IL, Diane Turner (Jerry), Georgetown, IN, Connie Jackson (Don), Hopedale, MA, daughter-in law, Brenda Miles, Charlestown, IN, a sister, June Miller (Jerry), Fredericksburg, VA, sisters-in law Delores Miles, Huntingburg, IN, Dorothy Miles, Mansfield, TX, grandchildren, Lisa Russell (Neill), Angela Comingore, Christina Armour, Jason Miller (Janine), Matthew Miller, Jerad Turner, Mark Jackson (Julie), Gary Jackson (Amber), Luke Jackson (Stephanie), and great-grandchildren, Miles, Owen, Maddie, Aubrey, Noah, Emma, and Fred.
Visitation will be from 2:00 - 7:00 pm, Friday, March 22, and 9:00 - 11:00 am on Saturday, March 23 at Kraft Funeral Service (2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, IN). The funeral service will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 23 at Kraft Funeral Service, officiated by Revd.’s Tom McGilliard and Ron Ellis. Entombment will follow at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made in Carl’s memory to Brandon’s House Counselling Center (1618 Beeler Street, New Albany, IN, 47150) or DePauw Memorial United Methodist Church (925 Vincennes Street, New Albany, 47150).
